The White House Website Launches on Drupal

The Open Government Initiative took a big step in propounding the ideas of participation and collaboration and did so by adopting an open-source technology to run the administration's main public facing website, www.whitehouse.gov on Drupal.

The administration first implemented Drupal on www.recovery.gov back in February.While the site has subsequently increased its overall budged and moved off Drupal, recovery.commerce.gov was recently launched on Drupal and a launch of the full site www.commerce.gov is in the works.

The Obama administration's adoption of Drupal is just the latest migration of a major website onto the popular platform. Other major websites built on Drupal include:

• Amnesty International
• Popular Science
• Mattel
• Sony Music
• The Economist
• Portland State University

The diversity of this list speaks to Drupal's extensibility. Drupal provides a platform on which you can build a site to meet nearly any requirements you can throw at it. It also proivdes the benefit of an active community surrounding it, meaning there are literally thousands of people working to keep the software up to date and running smoothly.
