Organizational Overview

Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Sustainable Harvest is a specialty coffee importer that has been transparently connecting the global coffee supply chain since 1997. Working with coffee growers in rural communities across Mexico, Central and South America, and East Africa, Sustainable Harvest builds direct, transparent market connections for these growers while simultaneously investing in training and management systems that enhance these growers’ ability to produce excellent coffee.

Sustainable Harvest uses a social enterprise business model---the Relationship Coffee Model--- that relies on a foundation of transparency, traceability, trade credit, training, and total product quality that has helped farmers secure better paying markets for their coffee. Time has proven that farmer training and capacity building programs can become fully self-sustaining (from a funding perspective) as coffee sales provide the revenues needed to keep the farmer training programs running after an initial investment has ended. In addition, Sustainable Harvest’s model of investing in farmer training has reaped rewards:

  1. In 2009, Sustainable Harvest was again ranked among "Inc." magazine's 5,000 fastest growing companies in North America;
  2. Farmer partners represent one of every eight pounds of organic coffee sold in North America.

Opportunity

Sustainable Harvest was seeking a web application company who can simplify their designs, help re-architect the information on their site and develop some new template layouts to be used on the home page, story pages and inner pages of their website. The overarching goal is to improve the visual appeal, simplify content and give more flexibility to the Sustainable Harvest staff as they manage their website.

Given that Sustainable Harvest uses the Concrete 5 CMS, Swipht quickly delivered on the requirements with little ramp-up time. In addition, Swipht  successfully completed a variety of similar projects and definitely prefers assisting socially responsible companies whenever the opportunity presents itself.
